Squalene is a polyunsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon which occurs widely in both plants and animals. The most abundant source of squalene is from the livers of deep sea sharks to be found at depths of as much as 1,500 metres. Squalene is not found in sharks living at shallow sea levels. Squalene may have preventative effects against carcinogenesis when it is taken as a dietary supplement especially when taken with vitamin E.

Squalene is an extremely safe product for human consumption. In humans squalene will not irritate either broken or intact skin, will not give eye irritation and can be safely ingested. In fact the presence of squalene is a characteristic of human skin surface lipids with the concentration ranging from as low as 1% in children to more than 10% in adults.
